    Stanning for Stella

    by 'N A Perfect World...

I’ve been stanning for Stella, designer Stella Jean for a few years now. When recently profiling her for TripAdvisor, I ended up feverishly writing my love story with the brand in a way that made my editor laugh. I submitted about 3 times more than was required and they worried it wasn’t “digestible” for the TripAdvisor audience! Fully understandable. I got carried away. TripAdvisor...

U.S. Black History Destinations for Business Insider

    by 'N A Perfect World...

In honor of Black History Month, Business Insider tapped me to round up great U.S. destinations to learn about Black history. Or, as I like to make note, great U.S. destinations to visit for a well rounded view of American history. I can’t note enough that African American history is American history. I’m very proud of this story. To combat today’s racial ignorance, we...

How To: Flying to Europe from the USA During the Covid

    by 'N A Perfect World...

Until July I hadn’t left my neighborhood in Brooklyn and less than 2 square miles around it. Since understanding the severity of the Covid pandemic, I was afraid to fly, seeing airplanes as petri-dishes. I flew direct from Milan’s Malpensa airport to NYC’s JFK on March 2nd and soon became unsure of when I would see my partner, Michele, as both of our nations...

I looove New Orleans. Sometimes I’ll watch shows I looove New Orleans. Sometimes I’ll watch shows set there because I love the accents and food so much. Oh! and the vibe. I think #SaintsNation is so fun and that was the last time I remember a Super Bowl party being fun! I was hoping that Michele and I could go last year but you know... just found these photos when trying to clear a downloads photo and have been loving the news reports about people turning their homes into #MardiGras parade floats.
💚💛💜

The right shade of yellow... Renovating and decora The right shade of yellow...
Renovating and decorating I’ve been reflecting on my travels wanting to incorporate inspiration and styles that I’ve seen in decor globally without it being scattered. It’s also about finding a happy medium btwn Michele and my sometimes completely opposite taste. I want to share some of that inspo with you.

This is @alsisarhaveli in #Jaipur, #Rajasthan. I love the incredible details on the hand painted moldings (zoom in)! The colors felt whimsical and magical and helped to create this absolute oasis separate from the city outside of the haveli walls.

🤷🏾‍♀️ What do you guys think about yellow walls? There’s currently a shade of yellow that’s not working for me... I’ll show you tomorrow. We might have to go on a hunt around the world for the perfect yellow wall... 💛🍯🧈

Some Saturday morning reading! New byline for @tri Some Saturday morning reading! New byline for @tripadvisor #BlackHistoryMonth package celebrating #BlackJoy. It’s a really beautifully done project and I was tasked with introducing a cool millennial new TripAdvisor audience to my favorite Italian designer, @stellajean_sj_ through a light profile and giving them just taste of some #BlackOwned businesses and creatives thriving in Italy. You guys already know my deep adoration and admiration of Stella but I also highlight some of my favorite restaurants, publishing houses and artists doing their thing!

I’ll link to the packages and these articles in my stories ☝🏾

Happy Lunar New Year, guys! This photo was taken i Happy Lunar New Year, guys! This photo was taken in #Chinatown in #Singapore. I wish I was there now celebrating and eating my weight — or even on Doyers st in NYC, Paolo Sarpi in Milan... but I’m home in Brooklyn, reading about the attacks against Asian Americans, and I’m pissed off. ➡️

@hownottotravellikeabasicbitch told us (not the first time) about the uprise in hate crimes against the Asian American community in October 2020 (I link to the post in my stories)... it has not gotten better. AND it’s seemingly been ignored. To me, this puts elderly Asian people at risk — if no one cares enough to denounce crimes against them of course they’re vulnerable to senseless acts of violence and theft etc.

The last slide is one of my stories from last year early pandemic when we really didn’t know what was going on but @nytimes used countless images of Chinatown in Milan to discuss the new virus suddenly sweeping the country. Asian attacks were on the rise at the time in Italy too. Italy at the time of the story had two confirmed deaths (those days!) and neither of those people were Asian but the times used pictures of Paolo Sarpi to illustrate Milan’s empty streets and an Asian woman with a facemask (we weren’t all wearing face masks then). To me this said a lot without saying as blatantly as Trump.

I stand with the Asian community, not just to celebrate Lunar New Year, and get 🧧from my friend’s parents, to vacation in Southeast Asia, to eat bomb 🔥 food. But also against anti-Asian sentiment, to learn and sympathize with their history of oppression and together to 🖕🏾bigotry in all forms.

Happy Lunar New Year!
I feel elegant, I feel cool, I feel ME in these @f I feel elegant, I feel cool, I feel ME in these @forevermark diamond hoops. From the boardroom, to Bergamo, to the block, these are my forever diamonds 😉 💎 Wanted to share with you guys a little history on hoop earrings and ties to various ethnic communities dating back centuries: they originate in 4th century Nubia! Seen as edgy and bohemian at their best, unprofessional at their worst, I'm channeling mega-royal vibes with my diamond hoops AND braids. I still have my first pair of hoop earrings, or one of the pair and these Forevermark natural diamond hoops are a pretty nice upgrade. Precious, natural, unique, regal.

Do you remember your first pair of hoops?

For @tripadvisor’s #BHM package I got to give a For @tripadvisor’s #BHM package I got to give a small taste of the rich Black culture in Italy that has welcomed me. Let’s start with FOOD! 😋For a smaller city, #Bergamo has quite a few Michelin star restaurants. It’s safe to say that the people of Bergamo know great food. Highly rated @ristorante_dahlak is a delicious family-run #Eritrean restaurant in Bergamo’s lower city. With mouth-watering Eritrean specialties served on enjera bread, beautiful, authentic Eritrean decor, great conversation with Andom and Haitanot, the husband and wife owners and family photos, you will truly have the feeling that you’re in a family’s home.

SAVE THIS POST AS A MUST VISIT when you’re in Bergamo.

Watching Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman at this Watching Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman at this years inauguration brought me to the excitement I felt watching poet, civil rights activist and memoirist Dr. Maya Angelou reciting her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the 1993 President Clinton inauguration. To me she was always regal, always an image of Black excellence her honeyed voice, her figure, embodied the legendary griot. I devoured  I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as soon as my mother deemed me mature enough to digest it.

✨ What is your favorite Dr. Angelou work? ✨

I committed her poems to memory. Before the succinct hashtag of #blackgirlmagic Still I Rise was on repeat in my head — it lead into Nina Simone’s Young Gifted and Black. She tasked us to be the rainbow in someone else’s cloud.

She was one of the first Black female interdisciplinary creatives to achieve mainstream success in America. She was a dancer, a playwright, a singer and an actress too! This was always a favorite photo of her and in 2018, I wanted to create it. I didn’t fully understand why I was drawn to it. It is of Maya Angelous before a Calypso performance at the Village Vanguard in NYC, the performers calm before the show. Her moment of peace to get into the right headspace. Maybe it was a glimpse into her process. She articulated MeToo, Intersectionality and of course Black Joy and Excellence, spreading them to millions. I am deeply appreciative of Dr. Angelou.

*I’m working on a few new recreations for this month that I can’t wait for you guys to see.

In honor of Black History month, I’ve contributed to Heather Greenwood Davis and Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon‘s package celebrating Black Joy internationally. The women wonderfully state You won’t find tragic stories in this package. Instead, we’ve opted to focus on Black Joy, on the parts of travel that draw us all year long, and on the ways we are working to change the industry so that it welcomes us as much as we yearn for it. Travel is in our blood, whether by force or by choice. And in a year when the world has shut down much of our access to it, we hope the decision to celebrate our past, present and future – told through this collection of contemporary stories by young Black writers – resonates with you, too.
