Serious Fashion FOMO – Chanel Resort Does Havana

It’s my favorite time of the fashion year. The Chanel resort collection! Whether in Dallas, the South of France the French house spares no expense invoking exactly the essence of why resort collections were created. This year’s exotic locale was non other than place of the mo’ Havana, Cuba. I definitely wish I had Chanel resort for my strut down the Paseo del Prado.

The fashion: So French-Cuban. That beret is so Parisian, non? But so Cuban, remember the image of Che Guevara. Panama hats with Chanel camellias, the accessories are on point! Fedoras and cohíbas. There is even some revolutionary nods with a military green shorts set. The collection is so wearable and so easy.

Chanel’s new It Girls? Speaking of French-Cuban, Ibeyi, musical group consisting of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz opened the show. You might have seen these beauties in Lemonade. Their performance is especially poignant given that their father is the late famed Cuban percussionist, Anga Díaz.

Fashion and travel? This is one fashion party I have serious FOMO about. Head to theCoveteur for some lust worthy inducing coverage of the event — really it was super hard selecting photos for this because all of the Coveteur’s 115 photos made me want to dance. If you really just want to see the fashions, no distractions, head to Vogue.com.

You might have seen on social media the heated discussion taking place regarding the sensitivity of a luxury house like Chanel hosting their resort collection in a “poor & communist” country. Here’s my humble opinion. Yes, Chanel can represent capitalism at it’s extreme but the artistry and craftsmanship is also art. In many instances in the collection, be it the ruffles, or the berets, an homage to the culture where the show was taking place. Having been to Havana, I can say there is a strong and proud appreciation for art there. This kind of spectacle also brings much needed dollars to the people of Cuba so I am all for it as long as it’s done in a tasteful way with respect and appreciation for the culture. Let’s not be culture vultures here.
