‘N’s Nomads: DJ Chelsea Leyland

How I met our #WCW and today’s ‘Nomad is definitely one of those NYC stories: I first saw her DJing at Ben Watt’s Shark Attack party out in Montauk and knew she looked familiar. I remember saying to my friend Chrissy, “Why do I know that girl, she’s a model right?” At the time I was working for Topshop and felt that if she was cool, young and British, it was my duty to know her. Luck would have it that I ran into Chelsea soon after at Topshop while she was shopping and I was on the sales floor doing a pull for a magazine. And our friendship begins there. Charmingly whimsical and always with a mischievous smile on her face, DJ Chelsea Leyland is the UK’s answer to sunshine. She’s a proud ambassador of #freethenipple and I’ve scorched many a dance floor during her DJ sets. Her work takes her all over the world and I was lucky enough to sit down with Chelsea and ask this ‘Nomad a few questions about her travels. And why BK is the best (duh!)!

‘N: Where are you from? Where did you grow up?

Chelsea: I’m from London and I grew up in South London, but I consider myself a West London girl as that’s where my family has lived for the past ten years.

‘N: Where do you live now?

Chelsea: Brooklyn, New York.

‘N: Why did you move there?

Chelsea: I moved to Brooklyn because it feels a bit more like Europe to me than Manhattan does. I prefer the calmer lifestyle, there’s a little more nature and a more of a neighborhood vibe to it.

‘N: What’s your favorite part about life in NYC?

Chelsea: I love the energy and the overall hustle. Everybody is constantly trying to make something of their life and has moved here with a dream.

‘N: Anything you miss from back home that you just can’t get in the States?

Chelsea: I miss the quality of the eggs and meat, I miss Neal’s Yard – they make the best organic skin care products and I miss the humor.

‘N: For first time visitors to your hometown what are three places / areas they must visit?

Chelsea: Borough Market, Portobello Market, and Kew Gardens.

‘N: What are 5 must-haves for packing for a weekend in your hometown?

Chelsea: A Shrimp Faux Fur coat, Reebok Classic Trainers, Burberry Biker Leather Jacket, Neal’s Yard Face Cream and a good umbrella.

one. shearling biker jacket, BURBERRY PRORSUM | two. leather trainer, REEBOK | three. hydrating face cream, NEAL'S YARD | four. umbrella, HUNTER BOOT | five. jaguar faux fur coat, SHRIMPS

‘N: Where is one of your favorite or most exotic place work has taken you?

Chelsea: Tulum, Mexico is pretty tropical, but then again so is Palm Springs and Singapore.

‘N: Any suggestions for new artists from the UK we should be listening to?

Chelsea: FKA Twigs
