When I first chatted with a few of the editors I write for, pitching Singapore, I must admit, many were quite skeptical. Luckily, Fathom always thinks outside of the box and just gets it. So here it is, for Fathom’s Food Tales:

Anyone who has spoken to me about my travels recently knows that I have a new love affair with Colombia. There will definitely be more posts on the blog coming soon about my amazing adventures in South America this winter. But in the meantime, wet your palates with my guide to Medellín for Fathom! Colombia is having a moment. Between talk of Netflix’s Narcos and Steve Harvey’s unfortunate blunder at the Miss Universe pageant, hardly a day goes by without the Latin American country being referenced. Drug trafficking and beautiful women aside, there is so much more to naturally rich Colombia than pop culture may lead you to believe, including Medellín, a city positioning itself as the next art and design capital of South America.
Joined by two foodie girlfriends, Raquel and Katie, I ventured to Chinatown restaurant Nyonya, one of the few places in NYC specializing in Singaporean & Peranakan food. I guess that’s the amazing thing about living in NY huh. It being such a cultural melting pot, there’s usually someplace that can satisfy your cravings.
Koreatown is in another stage of evolution now, becoming a real foodie destination with cuisine and dining experience to be reckoned with. I can’t think of a better example of this than the restaurant we chose, Her Name is Han.
Here’s a fun Thanksgiving meat alternative / addition to turkey that I tried at my godmother’s house as a kid and got hooked on: Cornish Game Hen. An amazingly flavorful small game bird, I loved having my own personal hen on my plate as a child and I actually liked the meat a lot better than turkey.

While in Negril and Montego Bay this August I took a cooking lesson at Prospect Plantation in Ochos Rios with Chef Adra Hillock. I can now say I know how to clean callaloo and jerk like a pro. Check out pictures and video from the day below as well as the recipes for you to prepare your own Jamaican feast at home – watch carefully for Chef Hillock’s little secret!
While in the land of jerk, I’d say without a doubt one of the best meals I had was not a jerk chicken, but a similar, but even more savory and spicy, Jamaican Devil’s chicken from a roadside restaurant, Murphy’s West End.
